It never will deliver you from your own despair And does it make you feel more like a man to feel cold steel in the palm of your hand? Well I’m not terrified, just mystified by your total scorn for my life and your own Do you want to be alone - you and your gun? You and your gun
Your gun don’t have the conscience I’m hoping you possess It offers no salvation nor will it ease distress And if you’re upset by what I just said and cut me down in a hail of lead Well you can’t blow away this simple truth all your hollow points They will come to rest somewhere then it’s just you standing there - you and your gun You and your gun
Catherine the Great
I saw rhinestones shining in the dark, the most beautiful thing in the RV park I know that I don’t deserve you Catherine And though legions have come under your command you dismissed every one with a wave of your hand – I’m down on my knees to serve you Catherine
And I’m willing to wait on Catherine the great
While my senses reeled in regal haze she tutored me in her worldly ways And I gave you what you wanted Catherine Then she opened the gates down to heaven below with one eye on the clock and one hand on my dough – you teased me and you taunted Catherine
But I’m willing to wait on Catherine the great
She says every last man on earth is fool, maybe absolute power has made her cruel You know I would never deceive you Catherine Then she whispered “the world is all hollow inside and the things that I told you well maybe I lied” You know I would still believe you Catherine
And I’m willing to wait on Catherine the great.
Water Song
The hammer comes down again and again Sometimes we wind up on the business end There’s bad luck and trouble flying all around And nothing I can say will make go it away Pain comes in every color of the rainbow Pain comes ‘til the dam won’t hold the water will no longer be contained Let the water flow
So what can you say when love is gone? Sometimes it’s best to pack up & move on Some clouds may pour rain and some just float by But only fools believe that they can trust the sky Pain comes in every color of the rainbow Pain comes ‘til the dam won’t hold the water will longer be contained Let the water flow
Dust Devil
Rising from nowhere in the high plains Out where coyote and rattlesnakes reign Restless could stir and wander this land Return and turn to chew sod and sand The sky’s a million miles wide, you scream & no one hears Dust devil appears So beautiful and wild, devoid of purpose or guidance it’s painfully clear We are intruders here
Where did you come from, where will you go? Spirit or cyclone, we’ll never know We’re slaves to clocks and calendars but time is different here Dust devil appears A tiny reign of terror knock you down & steal your hat But what can you do – sit there and laugh Here it comes again
Cattle skull bleach and bake in the sun Ribcage so clean the birds are long gone Circling high through crystalline days Patiently wait for sick, old, or strays So burn your clocks and calendars ‘cause time is different here The sky’s a million miles wide, you scream & no one hears Dust devil appears So beautiful and wild, devoid of purpose or guidance it’s painfully clear We are intruders here
The shareholdesr decided their shares were too damn low So they showered us with pink slips and said it’s time to go The twenty years I gave them and never much complained I gave my heart and sweat and blood - water down the drain
Water down the drain, water down the drain All of my ambition, all my tears and pain Water down the drain
They broke it to me gently and gave me severance pay Their sincere recommendations are on my resume’ In order to be streamlined they had to roll my head The sheep were led to slaughter – that’s why they kept ‘em fed
Water down the drain
Now I feel like a balloon torn from some careless child’s hand Ridin’ on a fierce and random wind Time wipes out the line between what you do and who you are ‘til you’re too far gone to start again
And everyone said “good luck” and shook me by the hand Trying to disguise all their relief it wasn’t them Some turn to the bible and some turn to the gun Some turn to the bottle, I might just turn and run
Water down the drain
#1
I had to do it all, be a big gun Be an ace and win every race that I’d run Now I feel ike a worm a little girl’s crying Can’t look in the mirror – I know what I’ve done Always tryin’ to be Number 1, number one -A real top dog I got to show some class and act like a man Number on number one – but I sure do wish I was a boy again
You step out of line you’d better understand I rule this block with an iron hand But when when some kid lies bleeding I feel like a turd I can feel the eyes stare but no one says a word Why I got to be numbe one number one Always the winner – I got to stay on top and never show show strain Number one, number one – but I sure do wish I was a boy again
I remember long ago cryin’ on a swing Daddy don’t push me so high
Type A, type A
went to see the shrink - ask him what he think he said “son, I got to mention you’re bound for hypertension”
Brand New Man
She turned to me as went for the door She said “you just wouldn’t understand” I just wouldn’t understand She said “I loved you once but not anymore And I feel like a brand new man. - I feel like a brand new man”
Now she feels like a brand new man
I drove aimlessly all over this town because I just didn’t understand I just didn’t understand I lost my rudder and I ran aground and she feels like a brand new man She feels like a brand new man
Now she feels like a brand new man
Now I think I’m finally over that girl and I’m doing the best I can I’m doing the best I can And every day I’m just a little more sure that I fell like a brand new man I feel like a brand new man
Kill Me Now
Something happened - a page was turned and I forgot all that I’d learned Left behind my pain & rage I worked so hard to reach this stage But now the lake is like a mirror nothing moving, nothing stirring Kill me now I’m so happy Kill me now I never could begin to say goodbye
That old sun is shining down And the dust in the air is hanging there Like a blizzard in slow motion Now I’m lying on the floor like I’ve done before But lately more & more & more & more Kill me now I’m so happy Kill me now I never could begin to say goodbye Something happened a page was turned and I forgot all that I’d learned
Don’t Bury Me
I keep bumping my head on the ceiling Scraping my face on the walls My curses echo and taunt me No one else hears ‘em at all Some real bad breaks & real mistakes my nerves are shakin’ But don’t you bury me
I’ve been down so long but I ain’t gonna lower my head ‘cause it ain’t over yet I’m still a million miles away from where I want to be Don’t bury me - don’t you bury me
Promises made and broken Love letters lost in the mail Maybe I missed my connection Seemingly destined to flail Through real bad breaks & real mistakes my heart is achin’ But don’t you dig that hole while I’m still in control
This train is leaving – no time to waste in grieving No time for regrets or tearful sunsets
Nothing is ever certain Mountains explode into dust The finest machine I assembled Fell into ruin and rust Through real bad breaks my hands are shaking But I will shake despair – I’m still breathing air
I’ve been down so long but I ain’t gonna lower my head “cause it ain’t over yet I’m still a million miles away from where I want to be Don’t bury me – don’t you bury me
Two Roads
Standing at the junction one more time When the sun comes up it’s choosing time Two roads leading to end of the line Two roads leading - which one is mine?
One road I traveled with my good friends It was the road to ruin it was a sure dead end I went down that road so many times It didn’t go nowhere but I did not mind
Now I’m standing at the junction one more time When the sun comes up it’s choosing time Two roads leading to end of the line Two roads leading - which one is mine?
PRODUCTION NOTES The songs on Deposition were written over a long period of time – the oldest being #1 which to best of my recollection was written during the end stage of the Raisins, so that would be sometime around ’84. Like all songwriters, I have a lot of tunes that for one reason or another never were recorded properly. This collection represents a first step in addressing that. With exceptions noted, I recorded and mixed Deposition from Jan 2005 thru April 2006 in my rather primitive basement studio on an Alesis HD24 recorder and a Behringer 9000X Eurodesk console. There was no software involved – mixing meant hands on faders, patch cables, etc. I used Joe Meek mic pres and a Rode NT1 primarily for tracking. Instruments used: Electric guitar – Fender telecaster > Danelectro or Marshall (or combination) amps Acoustic guitar – Alvarez, Gibson J-45 Bass – Fender Jazz Special or Rick 4001 > Joe Meek pre; or Englehardt upright Keys- Yamaha Motif (piano, synth sounds), Hammond organ, mellotron, ARP, accordian Track notes: Your Gun / pretty straightforward – 3 tracks of tele, bass, and great drumming from Chris. I used an AKG 414 (thanks Rob!) for this vocal. Dedicated to the late Michael Baney Catherine the Great / the sole appearance of the venerable ARP 2600 on this disc. Chris on drums. The P*dots did this live sporadically but never really embraced it. Water Song / My daughter sang Carmen back up on this. Bam Powell played drums, substituting a tambourine for snare. I did the french horn & bells on Ruthie Lincoln’s synth and used the upright bass. Mastering engineer Dave Davis thought this sounded like a Glen Campbell track. Dust Devil / This track originated at StudioBelew during the Car Caught Fire sessions. Chris came down with the flu, so in an effort to remain productive we started working on this idea Rob had and wound up recording it live 3 piece with Adrian on V- drums with the idea of turning it into a tune. I came up with words and melody, but it was subsequently rejected, so I was given permission to use it. I later added the slide guitar and some synth . Water Down the Drain / I’m a big Kinks fan & was definitely trying to channel Ray Davies somewhat on this one. I ran out of tracks and had to do some bouncing due to the doubled 3 part backing vocals in the bridge. I’ll apologize in advance to any real piano players out there for the solo – we do what we can. I used the Rick on this, Chris played the drums. interlude / Late night shenanigans with Ruthie’s synth. #1 / Ruthie Lincoln, Bam Powell & Lee Rolfes sang backups – the very last tracks recorded for this disc, Bam Powell played drums. I wrestled the accordion to a draw. My attempt at a heavy rock guitar solo – you be the judge. Brand New Man / The guitars & bass were from a demo I did on black face ADATs with a drum machine – Chris came in and made it much better. Hopefully this will be it for divorce songs from me. Kill Me Now / The most difficult tune to realize. The electric guitars (including the backwards one) & mellotron were taken from a 4-track portastudio demo I did in the mid-90’s. I couldn’t re-record them due to the mellotron being in much worse shape now and the inability to do a backward guitar track on my current equipment. I transferred the cassette tracks and then had to sync up the new tracks (acoustic guitar, drums, piano, bass, vocal) without the aid of a real click – it was mighty tedious. Bam Powell sucked it up and played a great drum track. Don’t Bury Me / The psychodots played a slightly different arrangement of this live for a while – this is the way I wrote it. I did manage to find one usable but imperfect fifth on the mellotron, so that’s here. Bam Powell on drums. Two Roads
/ The
string arrangement is 1 track plucked upright, 1 track
bowed, and two violas on Ruthie’s synth. Misery loves company. |
